The BlueAct Marine Society is pleased to invite you to a free community screening of

INCANDESCENCE (directed by Nova Ami & Velcrow Ripper, 2024, 104 mins.)

Every summer, wildfires increasingly ravage places around the globe, darkening the skies with thick smoke and reducing communities to little more than ash and debris. Award-winning directors Nova Ami and Velcrow Ripper weave together immersive on-the-ground footage with first-person accounts from Indigenous Elders, first responders, and ordinary people forced to react to a rapidly evolving ecosystem. As climate change continues to escalate, full suppression measures have largely failed, leading to bigger, more intense mega-fires. But there is another way. Indigenous knowledge keepers explain that the First Nations people traditionally used controlled burns to regenerate the land. Honouring the experience of both human and non-human inhabitants, the film transforms our understanding of fire from destruction and disaster into a kind of profound illumination, lighting the way towards new life and hope.

Following the screening of the film, there will be a Q&A with Sunshine Coast-based filmmakers Nova Ami and Velcrow Ripper, along with David McIlwraith of Fire Smart BC.

NOVA AMI is a Canadian documentary filmmaker of mixed Filipino heritage. Her current work explores themes of climate emergency and environment, focusing on the perspectives of women and diverse communities. Recent projects include Metamorphosis, with Velcrow Ripper, a theatrical feature documentary which explores the theme of change in this time of climate crisis, described as “breathtaking” by the Toronto Star.

VELCROW RIPPER creates powerful, cinematic feature documentaries that deal with the central issues of our times. His collaborations with Nova Ami include Metamorphosis, the web series Living With Dying, and the upcoming Planet 911 (a Knowledge Original, in post-production). His epic Fierce Light Trilogy began with Scared Sacred, winner of the 2005 Genie Award for best feature documentary, continued with Fierce Light: When Spirit Meets Action, and concluded with Occupy Love.
