SUMMARY:Incandescence in Gibsons
DESCRIPTION:The BlueAct Marine Society is pleased to invite you to a free c
ommunity screening of\n\nINCANDESCENCE (directed by Nova Ami &amp\; Velcro
 w Ripper\, 2024\, 104 mins.)\n\nEvery summer\, wildfires increasingly rava
ge places around the globe\, darkening the skies with thick smoke and redu
cing communities to little more than ash and debris. Award-winning directo
rs Nova Ami and Velcrow Ripper weave together immersive on-the-ground foot
age with first-person accounts from Indigenous Elders\, first responders\,
and ordinary people forced to react to a rapidly evolving ecosystem. As
climate change continues to escalate\, full suppression measures have larg
ely failed\, leading to bigger\, more intense mega-fires. But there is ano
ther way. Indigenous knowledge keepers explain that the First Nations peop
le traditionally used controlled burns to regenerate the land. Honouring t
he experience of both human and non-human inhabitants\, the film transfor
ms our understanding of fire from destruction and disaster into a kind of
profound illumination\, lighting the way towards new life and hope.\n\nTra
iler: https://youtu.be/e17xBip25Xs\n&nbsp\;\nFollowing the screening of th
 e film\, there will be a Q&amp\;A with Sunshine Coast-based filmmakers Nov
a Ami and Velcrow Ripper\, along with David McIlwraith of Fire Smart BC.\n
\n&nbsp\;\n\nNOVA AMI is a Canadian documentary filmmaker of mixed Filipin
o heritage. Her current work explores themes of climate emergency and envi
ronment\, focusing on the perspectives of women and diverse communities. R
ecent projects include Metamorphosis\, with Velcrow Ripper\, a theatrical
feature documentary which explores the theme of change in this time of cli
mate crisis\, described as “breathtaking” by the Toronto Star.\n\nVELC
ROW RIPPER creates powerful\, cinematic feature documentaries that deal wi
th the central issues of our times. His collaborations with Nova Ami inclu
de Metamorphosis\, the web series Living With Dying\, and the upcoming Pl
anet 911 (a Knowledge Original\, in post-production). His epic Fierce Lig
ht Trilogy began with Scared Sacred\, winner of the 2005 Genie Award for
best feature documentary\, continued with Fierce Light: When Spirit Meets
Action\, and concluded with Occupy Love.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nPlease register f
or your (free) ticket in advance at https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/special-sc
