The Indigenous Reconciliation Gathering in Winnipeg, Treaty One Territory, is hosted in partnership with the Southern Chiefs’ Organization Inc., Manitoba Métis Federation, Manitoba Inuit Association, and CFB Winnipeg. This free family-friendly public event honours Indigenous veterans, military personnel and the shared commitment to reconciliation.

There will be events throughout the day from 10:00 am – 6:00 pm. See all the activities at IRG | Voxair

The Gathering will include screenings of two NFB films:

At 11:40 am: FORGOTTEN WARRIORS – directed by Loretta Todd (1997, 51 min)

This documentary introduces us to thousands of Indigenous Canadians who enlisted and fought alongside their countrymen and women during World War II, even though they could not be conscripted. Ironically, while they fought for the freedom of others, they were being denied equality in their own country and returned home to find their land seized. Loretta Todd’s poignant film offers forth the testimony of those who were there, and how they managed to heal.

and

At 3:05 pm: THIS LAND – directed by Dianne Whelan (2009, 35 min)

This short documentary recounts a 2000-km expedition undertaken by 7 rangers (both Inuit and non-Native) and a female filmmaker to raise a flag on the northernmost tip of Canadian soil, 412 km from the North Pole. With a mesmerizing soundtrack by Nunavut-born singer Tanya Tagaq and spectacular footage of the Arctic landscape, This Land captures the epic adventure with raw immediacy.

Getting There: On-site parking at the base is extremely limited. A free continuous shuttle service will be running between Polo Park (Level 2 parking) and the base throughout the day
