TD Summer Reading Club

Every summer, the NFB offers a selection of films to libraries participating in the TD Summer Reading Club. Led by the Toronto Public Library in partnership with Library and Archives Canada, and generously sponsored by the TD Bank Group, the TD Summer Reading Club is Canada’s biggest, bilingual summer reading program for kids of all ages, all interests, and all abilities, delivered by more than 2,000 public libraries across Canada.

Participants explore recommended reads; track their own reading; connect and share with others across the country; read books online; join in activities; collect reading incentives; write jokes, stories, book reviews, and more.

How do I organize a virtual or in-person screening?

STEP 1. Choose the film(s) that you would like to show from the TD Summer Reading Club program. The program can be viewed here.

STEP 2. Send your selections to libraries@nfb.ca and include the date, time (or indicate if the film will be available to patrons all summer), and location of the screening, as well as the film format required for your venue. We can supply an electronic file (.mp4 or .mov) or ship a physical copy (projection-quality DVD or Blu-ray) for screenings in your library.

STEP 3. Organize your advertising for the event—promote the screening(s) in your networks.

STEP 4. Prior to your event, use your screening equipment to test the film format delivered to you (digitally or by mail).

STEP 5. Please make note of the number of people who attend each library or virtual screening. This assists us in tracking the outreach of NFB films. You may estimate the number if you can’t give us an exact figure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I have a virtual screening?
Absolutely! Gathering for in-person screenings may not be possible in many communities right now, but that doesn’t mean we can’t come together online for a virtual screening. Many libraries have been hosting virtual screening events using web-based platforms in order to stay connected and engaged within their communities.
Does the NFB provide promotional material?
For most of our recent titles, we can provide an Electronic Press Kit, which includes graphics for the film as well as additional information that could be helpful in your promotion or in a post-screening discussion, such as the trailer, synopsis, director biography, credits, etc. *Please remember to acknowledge the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) in your promotion. Events Page: We will promote your screening on our Events page, which you can use to promote your screening directly, or provide a link to it from your website or social media pages. Social Media: If you create a Facebook event page for your screening, simply include the NFB as a co-host; this will allow us to share your event among our social media followers too. You can populate your event page with the graphics, clips, and descriptions found in the Electronic Press Kit.
Is there a cost?
There is no cost to host a virtual or in-person screening of any NFB films offered in this year’s TD Summer Reading Club program. Since the films in our collection are bound by public performance copyright restrictions, admission to screenings must be free of charge, and DVDs/Blu-rays must be returned to us by regular mail after your screening or destroyed if they cannot be returned. Downloaded film files must be deleted. The NFB is committed to complying with these copyright restrictions and thereby respecting the work of the artists, technicians and professionals involved in these productions.
Can I purchase films for my library?
If you would like to keep a film for your collection, you may purchase it by contacting our customer service department at info@nfb.ca.
