The National Film Board has compiled a list of films for this year’s TD Summer Reading Club (TD SRC).

This short fiction film about a young boy torn between conflicting loyalties is resolved with humour and wisdom.

Roses sing on new snow |Yuan Zhang | 2002 | 7 min

In this animated short, Maylin cooks mouth-watering meals at her father’s restaurant in Chinatown, but her father and brothers take all the credit. When a dignitary from China visits and tastes one her dishes, Maylin finally earns recognition.

The Sound Collector | Lynn Smith | 1982 | 11 min

This animated short features Leonard, a 6-year-old boy with the unusual hobby of collecting sounds.

Catuor | Judith Klein | 1970 | 4 min

This film is about cats–actually, one very clever cat. The title is a play on the French quatuor, meaning quartet, but the chorus is not the usual alley-cat variety.

I can make art like Maud Lewis | Jane Churchill | 2005 | 12 min

In this short film from the I Can Make Art Like… series, a group of Grade 6 students are inspired by Maud Lewis, the celebrated Nova Scotian folk artist who painted scenes of country life.
