SUMMARY:Wilfred Buck - Victoria
DESCRIPTION:In honour of National Indigenous History Month\, please come to
IMAX Victoria at the Royal BC Museum for these two special free screening
s of Wilfred Buck\, on Tuesday June 17th and Wednesday June 18th\, both sc
reenings at 7:15 pm.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nWILFRED BUCK\n\nDirected by Lisa Jackso
 n (2024\, 96 mins)\n\nHe’s from the “fresh-out-of-the-bush\, partly ci
vilized\, colonized\, displaced people\,” and he’s here to take us to
the stars. Lisa Jackson’s portrait of Cree Elder Wilfred Buck moves betw
een earth and sky\, past and present\, bringing to life ancient teachings
of Indigenous astronomy and cosmology to tell a story that spans generatio
ns. This hybrid feature documentary follows the extraordinary life of Wilf
red Buck\, a charismatic and irreverent Cree Elder who overcame a harrowin
g yet familiar history of displacement\, racism and addiction by reclaimin
g ancestral star knowledge and ceremony.\n\nBuck is humble\, profound\, fu
nny\, always real and a master storyteller. As a young man\, his community
in Northern Manitoba is forcibly relocated to make way for a hydroelectri
c dam\, Buck’s family loses everything. He descends into the darkness of
the city streets\, surviving any way he can\, until he reconnects with El
ders who start him on a path that transforms his world.  Driven by insati
able curiosity and instructed by dreams\, Buck becomes a science educator
and internationally respected star lore expert. His mission is sharing the
se life-changing teachings—as relevant and urgent today as ever—always
guided by ceremony and anchored in the land.\n\nAdapted from Buck’s rol
licking memoir I Have Lived Four Lives\, director Lisa Jackson deftly int
erweaves verité footage of Buck’s present with archival footage and cin
ematic\, dramatized scenes from his past\, painting a portrait of a belove
d leader who now stands at the forefront of the resurgence of Indigenous w
 ays of knowing.\n\n------------------------------------\n\nThese screening
s will take place in the IMAX Cinema at the RBCM Museum and are free and o
pen to the public. Register for your free ticket (assigned seating):\n\nTU
