SUMMARY:The Whale and The Raven
DESCRIPTION:TORONTO PREMIERE!\n\nMirjam Leuze\n2019 | 101 min\nTo buy tick
ets\, click here.\n&nbsp\;\n\nOn the otherwise uninhabited Gil Island\, ju
st off the northwest coast of British Columbia\, the sound of waves lappin
g and ravens cawing is punctuated by the haunting whale calls emanating fr
om a network of loudspeakers. Drawn to the rich food sources and quiet wat
 ers\, humpback whales\, pods of orca\, fin whales\, and porpoises eat\, pl
ay\, and raise their young here\, in the Kitimat fjord system.\n\nWhale re
searchers Hermann Meuter and Janie Wray founded the Cetacea Lab on Gil I
sland to study this unique marine environment. But the imminent construc
tion of a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) exporting plant in the nearby co
mmunity of Kitimat\, BC\, promises to bring increasing tanker traffic and
noise\, with unknown consequences.\n\nDirector Mirjam Leuze’s The Whal
e and The Raven illuminates the many issues that have drawn scientists\,
the Gitga’at First Nation\, and the Government of British Columbia into
a complex conflict. As the people in the Great Bear Rainforest struggle
to protect their territory against the pressure and promise of the gas ind
ustry\, caught in between are the countless beings that call this place ho
 me.\n
