SUMMARY:The Whale and The Raven
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, January 21 | 7:00 PM\n\nGreen 13 Community Screening
in partnership with the Toronto Public Library.\n\nMirjam Leuze\n2019 | 1
01 min\nOn the otherwise uninhabited Gil Island\, just off the northwest c
oast of British Columbia\, the sound of waves lapping and ravens cawing is
punctuated by the haunting whale calls emanating from a network of loudsp
eakers. Drawn to the rich food sources and quiet waters\, humpback whales\
 , pods of orca\, fin whales\, and porpoises eat\, play\, and raise their y
oung here\, in the Kitimat fjord system.\n\nWhale researchers Hermann Meut
er and Janie Wray founded the Cetacea Lab on Gil Island to study this un
ique marine environment. But the imminent construction of a new liquefie
d natural gas (LNG) exporting plant in the nearby community of Kitimat\, B
C\, promises to bring increasing tanker traffic and noise\, with unknown c
onsequences.\n\nDirector Mirjam Leuze’s The Whale and The Raven illum
inates the many issues that have drawn scientists\, the Gitga’at First N
ation\, and the Government of British Columbia into a complex conflict. As
the people in the Great Bear Rainforest struggle to protect their terri
tory against the pressure and promise of the gas industry\, caught in betw
een are the countless beings that call this place home.\n
