  101 min\n\nOn the otherwise uninhabited Gil Island\, just off the northwe
 st coast of British Columbia\, the sound of waves lapping and ravens cawin
 g is punctuated by the haunting whale calls emanating from a network of lo
 udspeakers. Drawn to the rich food sources and quiet waters\, humpback wha
 les\, pods of orca\, fin whales\, and porpoises eat\, play\, and raise the
 ir young here\, in the Kitimat fjord system.\n\nWhale researchers Hermann 
 Meuter and Janie Wray founded the Cetacea Lab on Gil Island to study thi
 s unique marine environment. But the imminent construction of a new liqu
 efied natural gas (LNG) exporting plant in the nearby community of Kitimat
 \, BC\, promises to bring increasing tanker traffic and noise\, with unkno
 wn consequences.\n\nDirector Mirjam Leuze’s The Whale and The Raven i
 lluminates the many issues that have drawn scientists\, the Gitga’at Fir
 st Nation\, and the Government of British Columbia into a complex conflict
