DESCRIPTION:THE WHALE AND THE RAVEN\nat the 2020 Durham International Film
Festival!\n\nStreaming virtually on Friday\, October 2.\n\nTo purchase tic

  Magazine\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nMirjam Leuze\n2019 | 101 min\n\nOn the otherwise
uninhabited Gil Island\, just off the northwest coast of British Columbia
\, the sound of waves lapping and ravens cawing is punctuated by the haunt
ing whale calls emanating from a network of loudspeakers. Drawn to the ric
h food sources and quiet waters\, humpback whales\, pods of orca\, fin wha
les\, and porpoises eat\, play\, and raise their young here\, in the Kitim
at fjord system.\n\nWhale researchers Hermann Meuter and Janie Wray founde
d the Cetacea Lab on Gil Island to study this unique marine environment.
But the imminent construction of a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) expo
rting plant in the nearby community of Kitimat\, BC\, promises to bring in
creasing tanker traffic and noise\, with unknown consequences.\n\nDirector
Mirjam Leuze’s The Whale and The Raven illuminates the many issues t
hat have drawn scientists\, the Gitga’at First Nation\, and the Governme
nt of British Columbia into a complex conflict. As the people in the Great
Bear Rainforest struggle to protect their territory against the pressur
e and promise of the gas industry\, caught in between are the countless be
ings that call this place home.\n
