SUMMARY:KWAG Inuit Film Series (Shorts Program 2)
DESCRIPTION:Join the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery for this free screening
of four short films as part of their Inuit Film Series\, featuring:\n\n&n
 bsp\;\n\nThree Thousand (Asinnajaq | 2017 | 14 min)\n\n\nIn this short fil
m\, Inuk artist Asinnajaq plunges us into a sublime imaginary universe—1
4 minutes of luminescent\, archive-inspired cinema that recast the present
\, past and future of her people in a radiant new light. Diving into the N
FB’s vast archive\, she parses the complicated cinematic representation
of the Inuit\, harvesting fleeting truths and fortuitous accidents from a
 range of sources—newsreels\, propaganda\, ethnographic docs\, and work b
y Indigenous filmmakers. Embedding historic footage into original animatio
 n\, she conjures up a vision of hope and beautiful possibility.\n\n&nbsp\;
\n\nArctic Song (Germaine Arnattaujuq\, Neil Christopher &amp\; Louise
 Flaherty | 2021 | 6 min)\n\nIn this six-minute short\, Inuit artist\, stor
yteller and co-director Germaine Arnattaujuq (Arnaktauyok) depicts Inuit c
reation stories in all their glory. Arctic Song tells stories of how the
land\, sea and sky came to be in beautifully rendered animation. Telling
traditional Inuit tales from the Iglulik region of Nunavut through song\,
the film revitalizes ancient knowledge and shares it with future generatio
ns.\n&nbsp\;\n\nNunavut Animation Lab: The Bear Facts (Jonathan Wright | 2
 010 | 3 min)\n\nIn this animated short\, a self-important colonial explore
r emerges from a sailing ship and plants a flag on the Arctic ice\, as a b
emused Inuit hunter looks on. Then the explorer plants another\, and anoth
er\, and another\, while the hunter\, clearly not impressed that his land
has been “discovered\,” quietly goes about his business. In this charm
ing and humorous re-imagining of first contact between Inuit and European\
, Jonathan Wright brings us the story of a savvy hunter and the ill-equipp
 ed explorer he outwits.\n&nbsp\;\n\nShaman (Echo Henoche | 2017 | 5 min)\n
\nThis animated short tells the story of a ferocious polar bear turned to
stone by an Inuk shaman. The tale is based on emerging filmmaker Echo Heno
che's favourite legend\, as told to her by her grandfather in her home com
 munity of Nain\, Nunatsiavut\, on Labrador's North Coast. Hand-drawn and p
ainted by Henoche in a style all her own\, Shaman is the first collabora
tion between the Labrador artist and the NFB.\n\n\n\n\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nFor mo
