SUMMARY:Indigenous Short Films for NDTR
DESCRIPTION:As part of THE NFB IN LIBRARIES annual programming\, the Bright
on Public Library  is presenting Holy Angels and Our Maternal Home to mar
k the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.\n\nThe films:\n\nHoly Ang
 els - directed by Jay Cardinal Villeneuve (2017\, 13 min)\nIn 1963\, Lena
Wandering Spirit became one of the more than 150\,000 Indigenous children
who were removed from their families and sent to residential school. Jay C
ardinal Villeneuve’s short documentary Holy Angels powerfully recaptur
es Canada’s colonialist history through impressionistic images and the f
ragmented language of a child. Villeneuve met Lena through his work as a v
ideographer with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Filmed with a fi
erce determination to not only uncover history but move past it\, Holy An
gels speaks of the resilience of a people who have found ways of healing
—and of coming home again.\n\nOur Maternal Home - directed by Janine Win
dolph (2023\, 27 min)\n\nFilmmaker and educator Janine Windolph ventures f
rom Saskatchewan to Quebec with her two teens and younger sister\, tracing
their familial origins to the Cree First Nation of Waswanipi. Against the
scenic backdrop of these Traditional Lands\, Elders offer newfound interd
ependence and hands-on learning\, transforming this humble visit into a se
nsory-filled expression of reclamation and resilience. Our Maternal Home
lovingly establishes a heart-centred form of resistance to confront and
heal from the generational impacts of cultural disconnection\, making spac
e for what comes next.\n\n---\n\nFREE SCREENING\nTo have more information
on this screening\, consult the library’s Facebook page.
