SUMMARY:Indigenous Short Films for NDTR at Richmond Public Library
DESCRIPTION:As part of THE NFB IN LIBRARIES annual programming\, the Brigho
use branch or the Richmond Public Library  is presenting My friend the Gr
een Horse\, Woodland Spirits and Now is the Time to mark the National Day
for Truth and Reconciliation.\n\nThe films:\n\nMy Friend the Green Horse
 - directed by Alanis Obomsawin (2024\, 11 min)\nIn a luminous blend of sto
p-motion animation and live action\, My Friend the Green Horse tells the
true story of acclaimed filmmaker Alanis Obomsawin’s childhood refuge i
n a dream world rich with animal spirits. At the heart of this world is th
e Green Horse\, a tender and wise companion who\, along with other creatur
es\, guides young Alanis through visions of her Abenaki homelands. In thes
e nightly adventures\, she learns to embrace life’s beauty and to live w
ith compassion. This short yet powerful film is a poetic tribute to the la
sting gifts of childhood imagination\, cultural memory and spiritual conne
 ction.\n\nWoodland Spirits - directed by Dave Clement (2007\, 27 min)\n\n\
nFeaturing stunning scenery and powerful artwork\, Woodland Spirits high
lights the mentoring connections linking three men - Gelineau Fisher\, Mos
es Beaver and Andrew Machendagoos - representing three generations of Wood
land artists living in northwestern Ontario. All three have been profoundl
y affected by the life and work of the late Roy Thomas - a close friend\,
artistic influence and father figure whose wisdom on the connections betwe
en art\, people and the natural world is a key presence in the film.\n\nNo
 w is the Time - directed by Christopher Auchter (2019\, 16 min)\n\n\n\n\nW
hen internationally renowned Haida carver Robert Davidson was only 22 year
s old\, he carved the first new totem pole on British Columbia’s Haida G
waii in almost a century. On the 50th anniversary of the pole’s raising\
, Haida filmmaker Christopher Auchter steps easily through history to revi
sit that day in August 1969\, when the entire village of Old Massett gathe
red to celebrate the event that would signal the rebirth of the Haida spir
it.\n\n\n\n\n\n---\n\nFREE SCREENING\nTo have more information on this scr
