SUMMARY:Honour To Senator Murray Sinclair & Six Miles Deep
DESCRIPTION:As part of its Culture Days programming\, the Welland Musuem is
offering free public screening of the following NFB films:\n\nHonour To S
enator Murray Sinclair  (Alanis Obomsawin | 2021 | 29 min) \n\nAs the Ch
air of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission\, Senator Murray Sinclair w
as a key figure in raising global awareness of the atrocities of Canada’
s residential school system. With determination\, wisdom and kindness\, Se
nator Sinclair remains steadfast in his belief that the path to actual rec
onciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people requires understa
nding and accepting often difficult truths about Canada’s past and prese
nt. Alanis Obomsawin shares the powerful speech the Senator gave when he a
ccepted the WFM-Canada World Peace Award\, interspersing the heartbreaking
testimonies of former students imprisoned at residential schools.\n\nSix
 Miles Deep ( Sara Roque | 2009 | 43 mins) \n\nThis short documentary offe
rs a portrait of a group of women who led their community\, the largest re
serve in Canada\, Six Nations of the Grand River Reserve\, in an historic
blockade to protect their land.\n\nOn February 28\, 2006\, members of the
Iroquois Confederacy blockaded a highway near Caledonia\, Ontario to preve
nt a housing development on land that falls within their traditional terri
tories. The ensuing confrontation made national headlines for months. Less
well-known is the crucial role of the clan mothers of the community who s
et the rules for conduct. When the community's chiefs ask people to abando
n the barricades\, it is the clan mothers who overrule them\, leading a cu
ltural reawakening in their traditionally matriarchal community.\n\n---\n\
